Cultural significance of recoding in China’s Internet censorship

Abstract:

This essay deals with the ways in which users respond to internet censorship via the so called “recoding” techniques. The main references are made to the Chinese context but the essay also strives to implement them in the transnational context, based on Fan Yang’s article Rethinking China’s Internet Censorship: The practice of recoding and the politics of visibility. The concept of visibility is suggested as opposed to the traditional binary opposition of state oppressive censorship and the resistance. Instead of political aspects, a new cultural meaning making theory is described according to the research paper. The whole notion of censorship is critically analyzed and set in the general framework of media studies. In conclusion the suggested theories are critically approached and evaluated.

Tato esej se zabývá způsoby jakými uživatelé reagují na internetovou cenzuru pomocí “překódování.” (užívání kódových či symbolických výrazů odkazujících na citlivá témata) Hlavní příklady odkazují k čínskému kontextu, ale práce se take snaží zasadit tento fenomén do obecné skutečnosti překračující státní či národní hranice. Tato práce je založena na poznatcích autorky Fan Yang ze článku Rethinking China’s Internet Censorship: The practice of recoding and the politics of visibility. Práce nabízí koncept videtelnosti jako alternativní chápání tradičního protikladu státního represivního aparátu cenzury a odporu vůči němu. Naopak jej chápe spíše jako novou teorii vytváření kulturních významů než jako politický postoj. Práce kriticky přistupuje k pojmu cenzury v mediálních obsazích a zasazuje ji do obecného kontextu disciplíny. Závěrem esej kriticky zhodnotí nabízená stanoviska a nabídne vlastní náhled.
